Old Montreal

The traditional part of Montreal, known as the Old Montreal, offers many of the city’s activities. Take a cruise down the river, walk along European-style streets or dine at one of the many delectable restaurants in the area. Old Montreal is also home to many important museums like the Marguerite Bourgeoys Museum, as well as various art galleries.

Montreal: A Bird’s Eye View
The view of Montreal from Mount Royal is incomparable to any sight. At the top of the mountain you’ll find a magnificent park. Mount Royal Park is one of Montreal’s largest greenspaces. Another breathtaking view is from the tallest inclined tower in the world at the Olympic Stadium, which was built for the 1976 Summer Olympics. Facing “The Big O” stadium is the Montreal Botanical Garden with a collection of 22,000 plant species and revered as one of the world’s largest and most spectacular.

Montreal & Saint Lawrence
Running along the Saint Lawrence River is Montreal’s port; one of the most important in Canada. The Old Port, not to be confused with The Port of Montreal, offers many great activities like jet boating or cruises. Jean Drapeau Park is comprised of two islands in the Saint Lawrence River where you can find outdoor activities to be enjoyed year-round. One of the islands, Saint Helen’s, is home to La Ronde, a Six Flags amusement park.

A One of a Kind City
Montreal’s cultural life is vibrant from the cinemas and theatres to the bars and cafes. There’s never a dull moment! Shopping can also prove to be a vacation must. Saint Catherine and Saint Denis Street are both good places to start for shopping, dining or to find a quaint pub for a night cap.

Throughout Montreal you’ll discover over 30 museums, among them The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts which is the oldest museum of art in Canada. Not to mention the always noteworthy Canadian Centre for Architecture and Montreal Museum of Contemporary Art; which is located in Place des Arts a major performing arts centre in Montreal. For over 40 years the Place des Arts has hosted some of the biggest names in the arts and is also home to the Montreal Symphony, Opera and Ballet.

Underground City
If visiting Montreal in the Winter, skating and skiing are popular activities in the city’s many large parks. But all of the fun doesn’t just happen above ground. Beneath Montreal’s downtown is a whole other world- the Underground City. On your next vacation to Canada be sure to escape the cold through over 20 miles of tunnels that connect the shopping malls, apartment building, hotels, movie theaters and restaurants underground.

The City of Festivals
While Montreal may have short summers, they lose no time celebrating with cultural festivals and sporting events. A visit to Montreal in the summer will be busy with great events like the Montreal Fireworks Festival, the Montreal International Jazz Festival, FrancoFolies or the Just for Laughs Festival to name a few.

Whichever festival you decide to take part in while traveling in Canada the fun-loving spirit doesn’t end. The parties flow down the streets by day and night every weekend where you may even come upon Montreal’s famous mimes or acrobats. Definitely sights to be seen!
